Louisville, Ky — A cargo plane, Flight 2976, crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, killing seven, according to city and state officials.
The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. EST when a United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo jet went down in an industrial area adjacent to the airport, killing all three crew members and four people on the ground. The crash ignited nearby structures, including a petroleum recycling company and an auto parts store.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said on social media Nov. 5 that first responders had located nine victims. The flight was en route to Honolulu. As of publication, at least 11 people were reported injured—some critically—and transported to area hospitals.
Fueled for its transpacific flight, the aircraft erupted into a massive fireball, sending thick black smoke into the sky. The blaze burned for hours and was visible for miles. Local news outlets reported debris from the crash was strewn across two runways.
The Louisville airport, home to UPS’s Worldport hub, was temporarily closed. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order due to air quality concerns. “Air monitoring assets have been deployed, and we are working to keep the public informed and keep folks in the area safe”, Governor Andy Beshear posted on social media.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
