Akron, OH — The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating after a single-engine Piper PA-28 crashed into a home Thursday afternoon in Akron, killing the two people aboard.

The aircraft went down about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, May 14 in a residential neighborhood about 1.5 miles west-southwest of Akron Fulton International Airport, according to federal officials. During a Friday briefing, NTSB investigators said the aircraft, operating as a training flight, was conducting a second approach when it overflew the runway and “something upset the aircraft.” Witnesses reported seeing the plane spiral from about 1,000 feet before striking a road and sliding into a single-family home, where a post-crash fire erupted.

Investigators said a certified flight instructor and the aircraft’s owner-pilot died in the crash. Three people inside the home — a father, two children and a dog — escaped unharmed, though the residence sustained extensive damage.

NTSB officials described the scene as “pretty catastrophic” and said recovery efforts to remove the wreckage from the home are expected to continue through the weekend as the investigation proceeds.
